The carbon footprint should include additional information, comprising emissions from activities that are central to the airports operations and that an airport is expected to guide or influence. The “Optimisation” step of Airport Carbon Accreditation requires third party engagement in carbon footprint reduction. In this regard, on May 9th, 2023, the Albanian Civil Aviation Authorities held a training session on "Energy Efficiency and Carbon Emission Reduction" at Tirana International Airport (TIA).
Third parties including airlines and various service providers, independent ground handlers, catering companies, air traffic control and others working on the airport site participated in the training.
Training addressed issues of energy efficiency and carbon management techniques. It referred to setting minimum performance standards for example for building, operational practices and vehicle fleets and to promote incentives to encourage more environmentally friendly waste practices, policies for plastic reduction or use of efficient vehicles, for passengers and airport staff, catering companies, ground handlers, airlines, etc.
Upon the completion of the training, stakeholders participated in a knowledge-sharing session and expressed their gratitude towards TIA's commendable efforts in carbon energy management and investments made towards the installation of photovoltaic panels for personal consumption, electrification of GPU for aircraft parking, and implementation of LED installations in buildings. The integration of improvement activities aimed at enhancing energy efficiency, reducing waste, and minimizing carbon emissions at the airport. Furthermore, the parties recognized the significance of regulatory and financial support for business initiatives that can have a significant impact on achieving national objectives for reducing the carbon footprint.
Activities such as awareness campaign, seminars and forums will follow to ensure that the airport community understands airport policy and its goals.
